Remarkable was incorporated in 1996 by Edward Douglas Miller – Founder and Managing Director - initially operating out of a bed-sit in London.
In 2007-8 our turnover was £2.6m and this is predicted to grow to £3m in 2008-9 and £3.5m in 2009-10. We now have a 20,000 square foot UK factory and employ in excess of 30 people.
Remarkable is recognised as a dynamic and innovative manufacturer of environmental products with a recognised high street brand. We have a loyal customer base that shares our passion for our products.
Our business concept is to recycle everyday UK waste materials and manufacture them into innovative products to sell to consumer and corporate markets. In a world of increasing environmental concern we are providing our customers with the opportunity to choose a recycled and environmentally sound product whilst responding to the ongoing challenge of protecting and improving our environment.
Through our own innovation we have invented, designed and reengineered materials whilst installing production processes to turn these finite resources into reliable and performance-driven products.
The first product we invented was a pencil made from recycled plastic cups. This product is based on a simple but very effective concept – a mass market product used in almost all offices and businesses – we take waste from the office and turn it into pencils. The waste plastic cups are taken from offices and businesses and recycled, reengineered and reprocessed into the graphite writing core and the 'wood' of a pencil. The finished pencil can be printed with corporate or campaign messages and used as a tool to champion recycling within the office or business. We currently manufacture 4.75 million pencils per year.
In 1998 the Remarkable recycled pencil was voted "Invention of the year" and "Recycled product of the year". The UK plastics industry also voted Remarkable "Environmental Company of the year” which was a huge achievement for a small operation.
In 1999 our pencil became a "Millennium Product" and in 2000 was elected by the Design Council to represent Millennium Products in the Millennium Dome. During our exhibition in the Millennium Dome we manufactured 1.75 million pencils and our key challenge at this time was to manage the growing demand for our products as we grew from a small operation into an exhibitor with in excess of 6 million visitors.
Our increased profitability and profile during our time in the Millennium Dome provided funding for the company to move into a 6000 square foot factory in London in 2002. This enabled us to increase turnover whilst creating and designing new products.
In December 2004 we moved from London to our current 30,000 sq ft factory in Worcester. This required an enormous re-structure of the business. Managed internally we have grown from 6 employees to in excess of 30 employees. This has brought a wealth of new skills with key staff contributing to the future growth of Remarkable.
The company now has production lines processing a wide range of waste plastics, including polypropylene, polyethylene, ABS, Styrenics and PET. We have designed a process to take recycled tyre crumb and manufacture it into rubber sheets used for stationary products. The technology we have developed in-house has been used to develop processes previously considered to be unachievable. This technology has been used to create our consumer brand which has been sold into supermarkets, high street and independent retailers.
